Brief Description

Removal of residual suspended solids prior to the treated leachate being discharged

Project Need

In order to conform to stringent discharge requirements, the treatment plant had to be expanded and a continuous gravity sand filter was installed to remove the residual suspended solids prior to the treated leachate being discharged.

Description of Works

One of Europe’s largest independent waste management companies - and the largest in the UK - Shanks started life in the late 1800’s as a construction company based primarily in the West of Scotland. Waste management activities gradually increased and in 1986, the then-named Shanks & McEwan, acquired London Brick Landfill and an enormous landfill capacity in the northern Home Counties of England. This produced the foundation for further growth. Shanks take pride in offering waste solutions tailored to their customers needs and handle a huge range of waste from laboratories, heavy manufacturing and houses.

At Shanks’ Stewartby site, leachate from the huge landfill area is treated in a dedicated treatment plant, which has to conform to stringent discharge requirements. As part of an expansion of the plant, a model S-450 TOVEKO continuous gravity sand filter was included to remove residual suspended solids prior to the treated leachate being discharged.

The leachate arising from the site contains up to 10,000mg/l of chloride, which means that standard grades of stainless steel are unsuitable for use, since they would be subject to rapid corrosion. The filter was therefore manufactured in SAF 2205 duplex grade stainless steel, which is suitable for use with up to 30,000mg/l chloride.

The filter was supplied with a wash water supply pump pre-mounted onto the filter prior to testing and delivery to site. This means that installation and start-up is very quick and simple. Once located on a flat concrete slab, it requires to have power, compressed air and pipework connected and is then immediately ready for start-up which, once the filter sand is loaded, is normally complete within one day.
