Description of Works;
Exmouth, Mare Lane was an existing storm tank overflow equipped with a static 6mm Copacurve Crosswave Screen, measuring 4000mm(l) x 500mm(w). After each storm event the Crosswave screen required cleaning. The duration and number of storm spills at this location were originally under estimated. Combined with heavily loaded storm flows meant the screen required cleaning after each storm event, incurring high maintenance costs.
Due to the clients restructuring and increasing costs in maintenance it was decided that the screen cleansing should be automated.
Copa’s solution was to design, supply and install a Copa Tipping Bucket system which was to automatically flush the screen after each storm event.
Copa’s Tipping Buckets are manufactured from stainless steel. The bucket is finely balanced and tips on two sealed bearings, once the bucket has been filled and the center of gravity shifts.
The bucket is automatically filled using the pumping station flow. Control is achieved via ultra sonic level sensors, which initiates the control sequence and subsequent filling of the bucket.
The Series 1 Type ‘A’ wall mounted bucket, which can span up to 6m, was chosen for this project. The overall cost of the scheme was £23,000.
The Type ‘A’ bucket is the smallest in its range. The bucket volume calculates at 350 litres/metre and is capable of flushing a maximum screen width of 1200mm.
