MBR - Sissinghurst Wastewater Treatment Plant, Kent
  Printer Version

Current Status: Plant operational December 2004
Client: Southern Water Services Limited
Required Performance: 10:18:3:2 BOD:SS:Ammonia:Phosphorus
Brief Description: Replacement of existing works with a MBR process to achieve a tightened discharge consent.Construction undertaken within the boundary of the existing site and without disruption to the existing treatment process..

Project Background

Copa undertook the contract for the upgrade of Sissinghurst WWTW in Kent, for Southern Water. The plant is Southern Water’s first full scale submerged membrane bioreactor process for an operational works.

Copa’s contract was with Southern Water’s contractor for the K3 Eastern Area Programme (AMP 3), Morrison Brown and Root.

Process Description

The upgrade contract took place at the existing works and replaced the current trickling filter treatment process. The membrane treatment plant was constructed on the area of the site’s redundant sludge drying beds, allowing the existing works to remain operational throughout the construction period without the need for temporary treatment facilities. The use of the sludge drying beds for the new works has also meant that additional land area outside of the existing works was not required.

Copa’s contract was for the complete process, mechanical and electrical works associated with the membrane bioreactor process. Twelve ES200 Kubota membrane units were installed, located in two identical stainless steel membrane bioreactor tanks (six units in each tank). The two membrane bioreactor tanks are linked to a flow distribution chamber and sludge recirculation tank. The contract also included the inlet screens, air blowers, sludge recycle pumps, access stairs /walkways and the complete works MCC and associated SCADA system.
